JAMAICAN batsman Marlon Samuels has been named as the replacement for injured West Indies cricket team captain Ramnaresh Sarwan for the current tour of England.
And solid Trinidad and Tobago opening batsman Daren Ganga has been confirmed as stand-in skipper for the rest of the four-Test tour.
West Indies also play three One-Day Internationals and a Twenty20 match.
Announcement of the latest developments was made yesterday on radio station WMJX 100.5 which did not name the source of their information.
Samuels, 26, is a stylish but temperamental batsman who last played for the West Indies at the recently concluded Cricket World Cup which was staged in the Caribbean in March-April.
He has played 23 Tests scoring 1,044 runs with an average of 28.21 with a solitary century to his named. In 91 one-dayers he has notched up 2,121 runs for a slightly better average of 29.87 runs. Samuels has been scoring heavily in the Jamaica league and would be hoping to reassure the selectors that he still has a future ahead of him after a lacklustre World Cup and reports of disclipinary issues during the tournament.
He has been called into play after Sarwan fell awkwardly while fielding during the Scond Test at Headingley, Leeds last week.
Sarwan left England for home yesterday where he is expected to undergo six weeks of rehabilitation on his injured right shoulder.
He did not bat in either of the West Indiesââ‚Ã⠀šÃ‚¬ÃƒÂ¢Ã¢â‚¬Å¾Ã‚¢ innings because of a damaged acromioclavicular joint in his shoulder.
Samuels also had the dubious distinction of being the batsman on the other end when West Indies captain Brian Lara was run out during his last knock in international cricket against England at the Kensington Oval, Barbados on April 23.
Meanwhile Ganga has been asked to remain as captain of the team for the rest of the tour.
The hugely successful Trinidad and Tobago skipper took over when Sarwan hurt his shoulder in the Second Test. The West Indies gave a fighting display to draw the First Test at Lordâ₠¬Ã¢â€žÂ¢s in London before giving an all too familiar performance, going down by an innings and 283 runs in the Second Test with a day to spare on Monday.
The West Indies selectors are expected to name a vice-captain for Ganga on Saturday.
