I loved the story of the soucouyant. Imagine having to go thru the hassle of leaving your body every night, and igniting into a flying fireball and feeding off of people's blood:no:
We had a neighbour, who is dead now, but poor woman, we used to call her the village soucouyant

Dem folks enjoy that, there is great satisfaction from sucking people
I too grew up with the Soucouyant stories. People swear that they really exist.

the La Diablesse.. yea... know about those... near our school was another old woman who had a problem with her foot, and she walked with a limp... Poor thing, the children called her a la Diablesse, and her husband a Ligahoo. I was guilty of calling her names myself, but as I grew older, we became friends, and she was one of the sweetest people I've ever met

The Soucouyant (known as the Ol' Higue in Jamaica) is a Trini vampire who travels at night by shedding its human skin and turning into a ball of fire. It sucks the blood of its victims while they slumber. Typically, it appears to people as an old woman. To check if youââ‚Âà ‚¬ÃƒÂ¢Ã¢â‚¬Å¾Ã‚¢ve been bitten, look for two tiny bite marks anywhere on your body. In Puerto Rico and Mexico, legends describe a similar creature called the Chupacabra, which is usually said to attack only animals.

Of all these folklore characters, Douens give me the most chills. With the large straw hat, no face and feet turned backwards. Positively terrifying, especially when you consider that they are said to lure young, "un-christened" children into the forest never to be heard from again.
Papa Bois. What about him? I read about him in primary school.

La Diablesse
La Diablesse (Lajables), the Devil Woman, roames at night. She has eyes like burning coals and a face resembling that of a corpse, but hides it under a beautiful wide-brimmed hat and a veil over her face. She is dressed exquisitely in a blouse with puffy sleeves and long, petticoated, skirts. She has one cloven foot, which she tries to hide under her long skirts. She turns up at village dances, where she is immediately disliked by the women present, but she utterly charms the men and then asks one of them to take her home. He follows her, totally under her spell. She leads him deep into the woods and then suddenly she disappears. Unable to find his way home, the poor fellow stumbles around in the dark wood until he either falls into a ravine or a river to his death or gets attacked by wild hogs.
Old people talk: If you feel you may encounter a La Diablesse on your way home, take off all your clothes, turn them inside out and put them on again, and this will surely protect you from a La Diablesse.

I am a Trinidadian who grew up speaking Creole (Patois) and French at home I am sure that most of you know that our folklore comes from the French Creole culture of the island. As a kid I grew up with all of the characters like Papa Bois, La Diablesse, Maman Dâ₠¬ÃƒÆ’¢â€žÂ¢eau, Maman Malade, Lougawou and the Dwens. In addition to those I also heard about many others which most English speaking Trinis may not know at all. For example there is the †˜gajÃÃâ€*’à ƒâ€šÃ‚©ÃƒÂ¢Ã¢ââ ‚¬Å¡Ã‚¬Ã¢â€žÂ¢ a gajÃÃâ€*’© is a person who has given their soul to the devil in exchange for supernatural powers. Abikou are the sprits of children who have died as a result of neglect by their parents, they enter the body of children and steal nourishment from their bodies; if this is not address then the child will die. A mofwazÃÃâ€*’¨ is a person who can change their shape at will from small to large in an instant. The Creole name for a buck is swÃÃâ€*’¨tÃà †â€™Ãƒâ€*’¨ they can grant your heartââ‚ƚ¬Ã¢â€žÂ¢s desire if you take care of them. The Dowlis is a spirit that sustains itself by sexually assaulting women in their sleep. It is classed as a djombi (Jumbie) The Devils are called djab and people use them for Quimbois (obeah) and a Kadavi is a zombie who is brought back to life using kiyonou lanmÃÃâ€*’² (dead ritual) There are too many for me to list here!
toujou cool!

Of all these folklore characters, Douens give me the most chills. With the large straw hat, no face and feet turned backwards. Positively terrifying, especially when you consider that they are said to lure young, "un-christened" children into the forest never to be heard from again.
So, but that definition mostly Hindu and Muslim children disappeared into the forest. Interesting...
I really thought of the underlying ideas behind these stories.

That sounds like an incubus (the female to that is known as a succubus)

But we're these stories birthed out from African slaves? And they were brought up being taught Roman Catholicism, or something like that...
I dunno... I don't have any facts to back me up, so am just assuming

you could be right, the influence of the Catholic church took a while to penetrate the culture of the African people. the notation that unchristened children will become dwens if they die seems to go back to an old Catholic teaching which states that unbaptized children cannot enter heaven. this teaching could have been used to convince the Africans to baptize their children into the Catholic faith. its its also possible that over time the African belief in the existence of roaming child like spirits and Catholic teachings were merged to produce the Dwen. the Abikou and the Dwen are very much alike.
about the Succubus and the Dowlis, there are differences between them the male Dowlis can never kill his female victim. one is not born a Dowlis, you become a Dowlis and also the chances of become pregnent after an encounter with a Dowlis is vey high.

Shadey, if you were one of these real characters, which one would you be ?
he'd be a jumbie:yes:
I have had 1 encounter and 1 sighting.
I saw the ball of fire bit flying around at least twice in Trinidad. My nextdoor neighbour was rumored to be one of them.
then here in US one day I walked into a room where my husband was sleeping and this ball of fire came through the wall, approached where he was fast asleep, hovered over him....Man I had some fast talking to do...adamant as I was, I was not letting it take his spirit away and I told it so....and told it to get out of here and go back where it had come from....yes there was an emotional fight of wills and I WON....it left through the wall and to the outside and I never encountered it again....When he woke up I told him what had happened...he tried to explain it away in scientific terms....yes I gave him that look....and told him I knew what I saw.
