any phone can be unlocked, even the v3, but that's if any network service provider will give that info out. But if they do... they may even do it for free.. And that's always the best bet

Hey Cherry - waiting for the iphone price to go down? Join the list of people who waiting for the ipod price to go down. Is Apple. Never will happen. They just just replace with a new model and sell the old model cheaper. By time then it make no sense buying it. The only way it getting cheaper is if AT&T taking the loss on their own shoulder.

Cherry

saleekr, the ipod you cannot compare to the iphone. There is no real comparison for the ipod, the zune does get licks and them other mp3s not as boss as the ipod. Plus the market for the ipod is larger.

The iphone on the other hand is a niche market they are targeting, men/women who like cool gadgets with an above average income and could afford the iphone. At first, the iphone will make inroads, but in order to gain market share the price will have to come down.

Hawke
13-06-2007, 11:31 PM
What's the average price of an iPhone?

TEFLON DON
13-06-2007, 11:34 PM
500 - 600

trecaz
13-06-2007, 11:51 PM
some places have iphone unlocked on preorder 600 for 4gb and 700 for 8gb
major annoyance is the network bundled service functions, it would be sucky to only have 1/4 of the features usable because your provider is deficient, I also hope they learned lessons from ipod video screen incidents... it would be a shame to have to put something looking so cool in a big plastic case, nevermind the touch screen features being hampered

i'll wait for 2nd -3rd gen before considering it thanks
when they fix the first release issues, get some on par competition and drop prices, the whiz kids crack the OS and start writing boot patches and cool mods, it'll probably still look cool or perhaps I will see the next best thing that learned from everything they will inevitably do wrong

Cherry
13-06-2007, 11:55 PM
benko, of course you have to put it in a big plastic case...you should see my video ipod lol wrap up tight tight.

As for the price.. it wouldn't sound bad in euros, but these bloody salespeople here does sell thing with figures higher than the US own though the dollar worth is stronger...

just upgraded my Sony Ericsson T616 and Nokia 6310i for a V3i, sigh I wanna sell that V3i, missed the important fact of how sucky the OS and software is, just a completely dyslexic interface, I can barely navigate my contact list properly and I have 900plus contacts ...worked great with my Nokia and slightly less efficient on T616 buh the V3i is ridiculous

I foresee another Nokia in my near future, and a whole lot less money on phones though iphone has nice PDA potential, SSD costs dropping and flash mem price fixing scandals aside price for feature like in iphone should drop.. Ithink the display and interface would be the next most costly manufactured part... but software will still be major pulling point towards iphone when competition begins to hit hard

i got to play with one today. it is pretty cool, but unless you travel alot or are some sort off business exec then this item just an expensive, cool toy. the whole touchscreen thing is nice. the user interface is very easy to use and navigating the menu is a breeze. i'd be afraid to own one simply because i hate to have to deal with dropping it, and you know somehow you will drop it.

Let your iPhone run wild and free †¦ free of AT&T that is
http://blogs.zdnet.com/hardware/?p=586

Jon Lech Johansen (aka †œDVD Jonââ‚ ¬Ãƒâ€šÃ‚) has done it again. Once again heâ₠¬ÃƒÂ¢Ã¢â‚¬Å¾Ã‚¢s sticking it to the man and come up with a way to activate an iPhone without having to sign up with AT&T.

Iâ₠™ve found a way to activate a brand new unactivated iPhone without giving any of your money or personal information to AT&T NSA. The iPhone does not have phone capability, but the iPod and WiFi work. Stay tuned!

In order to be able to pull off this stunt youââ‚ ¬ÃƒÂ¢Ã¢â‚¬Å¾Ã‚¢ll need to download his special iPhone Activation Server Software (http://nanocr.eu/wp-content/PhoneActSrv-v1.0.zip). But heâ₠¬ÃƒÂ¢Ã¢â‚¬Å¾Ã‚¢s not made it simple for those wanting to break free of AT&Tâ₠™s grip - you need to be able to make sense of the magic numbers!

Magic iTunes numbers:

Offset 2048912: 33C0C3

Offset 257074: 28

Offset 257013: 33C9B1

This is so going to annoy AT&T.

---> my 2c <----
based on this review it rationalizes my thinking that perhaps 3rd-4th gen or competitive attempts in time will be a better buy, as far as functionality goes it fails in some critical areas. eg simultaneous data and phone capabilities, strong software, application flexibility, email application features, usability issues (application quirks, bugs, design oversights). Suggested metrics that have been de-emphasized in favour of strengths include:
* Replaceable battery? * GPS? * 3G? * Traditional keyboard? * Flash compatible? * Camera resolution? * Price? * Weight?
* Native email support? * Choice of networks? * Processing Power? * Installable Application selections?
It has style, incredible battery life, and a huge wow factor with the touch interface and hardware detail.. so a great base, software can be fixed over time once issues are identified.. so again I say I will wait for it.. perhaps even this ver. will just be fixed with software patches on existing hw but that price could do with some heavy subsidies, no doubt the hw is expensive.. dunno if it will ever be worth it for a device with such limited scope, anyone remember why PDA's are a dying breed being merged with cellphones as a comeback... Portable computing power is getting cheaper (arguably not portable enough for some, and when portable, not powerful enough for others), looking at the huge revenue earnings of cell phones (not just from hw sales the sustainability of earnings from plans, subscriptions, and reinvestments in hw with trickle releases of age old tech, phones getting cheaper but the 3 tier market of cheap phone, really functional phone, and stylish and functional phones, is constantly renewable, the upper echelon the iphone is targeting constantly seeks more and more so innovation vs price never becomes a true war.. well anyhone the short of it is ppl will only pay soo much and always someone will buy the next new ting, until it become old then it falls into the middle price tier or falls off the market -- without innovation that is.

It seems you did not read all of my previous posts on the subject , they explain the reason I would not chose to purchase an iPhone at this time. note: I did not post a review, I posted links to reviews and gave my analysis of them including tech and market predictions.
Annoyingly enough i'll probably get to play with one next week, and knowing what the quirks are will only make the experience worse (imagine shiny new toy and you know what sucks about it), oh well not my money fuh dat!

Don't get me wrong, i'm not saying that i don't agree with what you said. But you did say you are giving your 2 cents i just wondered if it was based solely on the articles you have read? Which was my question. I'm a firm believer of reading reviews before i buy anything.
So i look around and see what i can find. But i always ask/send an email to the person giving the review or their "2 cents" have they actually used the device, not just for a few minutes, but actually used it and all of it functions. I work on a few software development projects where you put something out for people to use with that hope that people actually use it. Then if there are real glitches, that people report them back and they get fixed.
However what usually happens is that one person get a glitch in the matrix with ONE installation and they post their review on that, then someone sees that review and posts their review or comment based on that review, without actually using the software and the ripple begins.
Then in the end you have numerous reviews of people saying all these problems are being had, when what really happened was that the first person had a software or hardware conflict.
Get me?
So that is why i always ask.
Did you base your 2 cents on a googled review or have you actually tried out the phone?

I bought the iphone for myself, my wife and my staff.
It syncs well and works perfect with the company email, with microsoft outlook and Outlook Exchange, emails are sent and received. Deletion not a problem.
The battery life outlasts any PDA or Blackberry.
Remarkably for a person like me who has big fingers the keyboard is a hell of a lot easier to use than the PDA's and Blackberry, but yes it does take a little getting used to.
Security wise, our network does not have a problem and with the recent update the safari problem is basically covered.
The WIFI and VPN networks are smooth, my IT department is in love with the ease.
The downside is on AT&t side. Phone quality is on average, not the best but in no means the worst.
And as for the edge network, well that can kiss my ..., but the wifi capability more than makes up for that.

So my 2 cents is it's a good buy for the average business person or power house.
As i said before about PDA's and BlackBerry if you don't have a business or you not in a job that requires the extensive use of such a tool, don't buy this. It's a waste of your money. Anyone who buys a smart phone and only uses it to check emails, surf myspace and play games just looses the whole essence of these devices.
They are business tools, multi tasking tools.
It's like the fools who originally bought hummer to drive in the city.
Why buy a ocean liner to sail in a little lake?
